June – Wrapping Up the First Half of the Year

June marks the conclusion of Term 2 and the midpoint of the school year. As schools prepare for mid-year reports, student showcases, and the upcoming winter break, the workload for teachers increases significantly. During this busy period, Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs) play a vital role in maintaining classroom continuity and ensuring students remain engaged while permanent staff focus on planning, assessment, and administrative responsibilities.

In June, many classrooms are focused on wrapping up learning units and completing assessments. CRTs are often called upon to supervise tests, oversee project work, or support end-of-term activities. Clear communication and attention to detail are essential during this time. Taking the time to fully understand lesson plans, assessment expectations, and behaviour management strategies ensures a smooth and productive day for students.

Student engagement can be a challenge as the term draws to a close. Energy levels may dip, and motivation can fluctuate, particularly during the colder winter months. CRTs can support engagement by incorporating fun, reflective, or creative activities into the day where appropriate. Tasks such as journaling, collaborative projects, art-based reflections, or goal-setting activities help students stay focused while still feeling purposeful and enjoyable.

Flexibility is especially important in June. Teachers may be attending professional development sessions, finalising reports, or participating in planning meetings, which can result in CRTs covering multiple year levels or subjects within a short period. Approaching these changes with adaptability and a positive mindset reassures students and staff alike. Being prepared with adaptable activities and strategies allows CRTs to respond confidently to changing schedules.

June is also an ideal time for professional reflection and organisation. Updating records of placements, experiences, and feedback received throughout Term 2 helps CRTs track professional growth and build a strong portfolio. These notes can be invaluable when applying for block work, seeking references, or planning future professional development. Reflecting on which schools, year levels, or teaching environments you enjoy most can also help guide decisions for the remainder of the year.

As the mid-year break approaches, it’s important for CRTs to prioritise rest and wellbeing. Teaching, particularly in a relief capacity, requires significant energy and adaptability. Taking time during the holidays to recharge, reflect, and reset helps prevent burnout and ensures you return refreshed and ready for Term 3.

Ultimately, June is about finishing the first half of the year on a positive note. By maintaining engagement, supporting schools during a high-demand period, and reflecting on professional progress, CRTs set themselves up for a confident and successful return in the second half of the school year.
